Day and night soft contact lens
Day and night soft contact lenses let you -- if your doctor says your eyes are
healthy enough -- wear your contact lenses for a week or even a month at a time before changing them.
This means you don't need to clean them, enzyme them, or even take them out at
night when you go to sleep.
The downsides of this are that sometimes inexperienced contact lens wearers have difficulty removing the day and night soft contact lenses,
simply because they lack the experience daily insertion and removal gives people. Fortunately there are tools that can help the
inexperienced remove the lenses safely, and since the lenses won't be removed regularly
The other downside to day and night soft contact lenses is that they trade long term durability for low maintenance. This means that
although they don't build up
proteins and other gunk the way regular daily wear lenses do, they also degrade faster because they shed surface layers (which are entirely safe
for healthy eyes) to stay clean.
Because of this shedding property, keeping the lenses going longer than the manufacturer recommends isn't a good idea as the vision quality, at
least, will degrade. This also means they're not entirely maintenance free for everybody. You may want to use eye drops regularly to
help rinse away gunk from the lenses (ask your optician about which eye drops would be good for your eyes).
Now, the lenses are soft rather than hard, which means they're bendy and jelly-like and so they're easier to fit to your eyes and more
comfortable. They're also gas permeable, which is something you'd expect from lenses you can wear continuously for a month.
The day and night soft contact lenses are available in a variety of lens types. There are single vision lenses for people who need regular
vision correction, multi-focal
lenses for presbyopics who need both distance and close up correction, toric lenses for those of us with astigmatism, and aspheric lenses for
people who need special vision correction. There is also a variety of colors that can give you the look you want while they correct your
vision.
